The government has decided to seek foreign assistance to address the traffic problem in the Malé area.

Speaking at a press conference held by the Ministry of Transport on Wednesday, January 3, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen expressed concern about the overcrowding of vehicles and traffic congestion in the Malé area. He said that a tactical plan is being developed in collaboration with government authorities to find effective solutions to this issue.

In the span of five years, a total of 69,780 new vehicles were registered, with over 42,000 registered in Malé City.

The minister added that it was an unusually high number.

"Therefore, as you know, if we continue at this scale with this trend, we will not be able to contain it within the Malé area," Minister Ameen said.

To address the issue effectively, the minister announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a foreign party to secure professional expertise through international funding. This collaboration aims not only to provide recommendations to the cabinet but also to prompt legislative amendments.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will engage countries like the UAE or Singapore, known for successfully managing global traffic challenges, to bring in experts for a comprehensive analysis of the issue.

In addition to addressing traffic concerns, the government plans to construct parking buildings in the Malé area to alleviate the parking problem. Further details will be announced at a later date, according to the ministry.
