President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has extended congratulations to Adam Azim, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s candidate, who won today's mayoral election.

In a post on social media X, the President's Office stated that the President had congratulated Azim via a phone call, and pledged to offer cooperation from the government to the Male' City Council and the Mayor.

President Dr Muizzu has stated previously that the then incumbent MDP government had presented multiple obstacles to his work when he was formerly serving as the capital city's mayor.

During the campaign rallies of his party, People's National Congress (PNC), candidate Azima Shakoor, the President had appealed to the public to "not take a risk" by electing a mayor who is not aligned with the government, as this will impede the implementation of the government's plan.

A total of 55 vote boxes were placed in Male', Villimale' and Hulhumale' for today's election. As per the provisional results announced at the completion of counting of 41 of these boxes, Azim won through receiving 5303 votes. His closest contender, PNC's Azima, received 3301 votes. The Democrat's candidate Saif Fathih received 1634 votes.

As per the statistics released by the Elections Commission, turnout for this election is at about 30 percent of the electorate.
