As the only government-run hospital in Hulhumale', which has a significant population, it has now been upgraded to a tertiary hospital with the necessary upgrades, Haleem said.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu today officially inaugurated Hulhumale' Hospital as a tertiary level hospital, with the launch of additional services.
During a ceremony held this evening at Hulhumale' Hospital, Health Ministry Commissioner of Quality Assurance Thasleema Usman handed over the registration and operating license to Dharumavantha Hospital CEO Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem.
At the ceremony, Haleem said he was entrusted by President Dr Muizzu to improve the services of the Male' City Group of Hospitals and introduce new innovations.
He noted that the President had also arranged an operational budget and provided health workers to achieve this goal.
Until now, Hulhumale' Hospital had been operating as a Level 2 hospital but received a large number of patients daily, Haleem said.

- A ten-bed ICU was opened to address the challenge of treating critically ill patients, reducing the need for referrals to other facilities
- A NICU was launched to provide phototherapy and immediate care for newborns, helping to reduce the burden on IGMH
- A central sterile services department was established to enhance disinfection, infection control, and patient safety
- Four operating theatres were inaugurated, including facilities for orthopedic surgery, eye surgery, women’s health, and general surgery. Each theatre is equipped with the latest technology.
Haleem said this will solve the issue of a lack of theatres for elective surgeries.
At the ceremony, Haleem said that while Hulhumale' Hospital has been upgraded to a tertiary facility, significant challenges remain. Efforts are underway to address space constraints, with plans to increase the ER bed capacity to 14 in the near future.
Work on this expansion is set to begin this week, he said.
Haleem highlighted the high demand for dialysis in Hulhumale', noting that only 10 beds are currently available for the service, which operates 24 hours a day. With many patients on the waitlist, the hospital plans to expand the dialysis facility to 30 beds. An additional 28 beds will also be added to address space constraints.
“While this hospital is now a tertiary facility, the bed capacity remains a major issue and we plan to construct more buildings to expand the hospital's capacity,” Haleem said.
He emphasized that these developments go beyond infrastructure, embodying the hopes of the people and reflecting the President’s policy to bring health services closer to community.
Following the ceremony, President Muizzu toured the newly opened departments.
