The parliamentary representative of Dhiggaru Constituency MP Ikram Hassan, on Monday, apologized for his behaviour towards a frontline worker during a COVID-19 sample collection at Maafannu Madharusa in capital Male'.

While the matter is currently under investigation by the Maldives Police Service, the lawmaker's sudden apology was followed by an issue raised by the Maldives Health Professional's Union (MHPU) at the Parliament Committee on Member’s Privileges and Ethics earlier the same day.

Although he was alleged to have assaulted a health worker, who is a certified nurse volunteering for the Maldivian Red Crescent during the COVID-19 pandemic, MP Ikram denied all claims.

However, he noted that he did respond in anger after the frontliner caused him discomfort while undergoing a nasal swab test.

Ikram met with the nurse and her mother to apologise, which he further extended to the Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC)'s Rapid Response Team (RRT).

Following MP Ikram's initial statements in which he accused health workers of taking samples in hurtful manners, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) released a circular on Sunday, asserting that all volunteers and health workers conduct the tests with compassion and under strict health protection guidelines.
