President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said on Saturday that Maldives has signed an agreement with Turkey to import staple food to the country.

This announcement was made in the statement he gave after his first official trip to China after assuming office, at the request of President Xi Jinping.

The president’s first official oversea trip after he was sworn into office on November 17, 2023, was to Turkey. He met Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and held important discussions during this trip.

“Rice, flour, sugar, and other varieties, as much Maldives needs for one year with an added ten percent, has been agreed upon now. The order for the first shipment has now been made. It will come in February,” President Muizzu said. He said arrangements have been made to import goods such as onions, potatoes, and eggs from other countries as well.

He said the government is currently working towards arranging to facilitate ways for Maldivians to access Aasandha services in Thailand and Dubai as well.

Muizzu said he was trying to end the practice of Aasandha being available only from medical facilities in "particular countries".
