The issue came to light after a video emerged on social media showing three speed boats being sailed dangerously, with the public raising safety concerns.
Police said that the investigation so far has revealed that the boats were travelling to Alif Alif Atoll. They said that no arrests have been made in relation to the case as of yet.
The video circulating on social media shows the boats seeming to race against each other, speeding towards the harbour of an island.
A speedboat called 'Nasru' speeds up at one point, overtaking another boat called 'Relax Gold' and entering the harbour.
A third boat called 'Ramzu Queen' follows these two boats.
There is a second video as well on social media platform TikTok showing the same three boats again engaged in racing.
