Pakistan donates MVR 2.6 million to Meemu Atoll Council on Monday to build a community center in Muli of Meemu atoll.

In a ceremony held in Muli, the foundation stone was laid for the "Gaide Auzam Mohamed Ali Jinah Memorial Pakistan-Maldives Community Center" as well. The foundation stone of the centre was laid by High Commissioner of Pakistan to The Maldives Ather Mukhtar President of Meemu Atoll Council Mohamed Nimal.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Mukhtar noted that the community center is another building that will reflect the long standing relations between Maldives and Pakistan. He assured that Pakistan will continue to assist the Maldives in the future as well.

Senior Council Executive at the Meemu Atoll Council Office Mohamed Niyaz told Mihaaru news that the community center will benefit the residents from nearby islands that visit Muli often, commonly for medical treatment.

As the island lacks a common place like this, visitors often have to pay high rent at daily rates while booking rooms for the duration of their stay.

To address this issue, the community center will be developed with rooms, a hall to conduct seminars and trainings, he said. A restaurant will be made on the top floor of the center as well.

“The council took the initiative to reach out to the Pakistan Embassy to discuss the issue, which lead to the assistance. The community center will be built so that it will generate income for the council, while ensuring it makes things easier for the people. We are currently considering using renewable energy to provide electricity to the building,” Niyaz said.

The council expects that once construction starts, it will take a year to complete the community center.
