President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to introduce a generation ban to prevent youth in Maldives from taking up smoking and to reduce tobacco use in society.
President Muizzu made the announcement during the first episode of "Rayyithunnaa Eku" [With Citizens], a podcast hosted by the President’s Office.
During the podcast, President Muizzu discussed both existing measures and upcoming plans to further control tobacco use. Highlighting the purpose of the generation ban, he said it was designed to ensure young people never start using tobacco, with further details to be shared later.
The generation ban has been adopted in various countries to prevent young people from taking up smoking.
Beyond tobacco control, the President highlighted broader health initiatives, including efforts to make fruit and vegetables more affordable. He reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting a healthier lifestyle for all citizens.
Following the enforcement of the Tobacco Control Act banning the use of vapes in the country on December 15 last year, the total amount of fines related to use vape use exceeded MVR 160,500.
Under the law, using vapes carries a fine of MVR 5,000, while distributing vapes for free results in a fine of MVR 10,000, and selling vapes incurs a fine of MVR 20,000.
Additionally, selling vapes to individuals under 21 results in a fine of MVR 50,000.
