Major bills to be introduced in Parliament, including simultaneous Presidential and Parliament elections

The most important bill to be introduced in the first session of this year is the amendment bill to hold presidential and parliamentary elections simultaneously, President Muizzu said.

Parliament passed 30 bills to improve the situation in the country last year and the government will introduce many more important bills in Parliament this year as well, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said today.

Delivering the Presidential Address during the first session of the Parliament this year, President Muizzu said that 35 bills were introduced by the government last year. These include eight new bills, 21 law amendments and a constitutional amendment bill.

President Muizzu said that the the most important bills was a constitutional amendment to prevent the permanent presence of foreign troops and a constitutional amendment requiring parliament approval before doing anything that would add or remove to the territory of the country.

At the same time, the amendment that allows MPs to lose their seats if they change switch parties is also an important amendment, President Muizzu said.

“These amendments include amendments to the law to further strengthen and the bail system in place, and amendments to the law to curb cases of online fraud and cases of cyber crime,” he said.

The most important bill to be introduced in the first session of this year is the amendment bill to hold presidential and parliamentary elections simultaneously, President Muizzu said.

Following this, the government will also propose a bill to seek the opinion to amend the Constitution to start the presidential term on November 11, he said.

President Muizzu had earlier said that the bill on the amendment process for the establishment of the legal framework for constitutional amendments to go to a referendum to seek public opinion would be scheduled in Parliament in the first session of this year.

Other bills President Muizzu said will be introduced this year:

- Amend the determination of the number of members of the Parliament

- Proposed amendment to change the composition of JSC

- Amendments to the Anti-Corruption Act, the Penal Code and the Criminal Procedure Act to prevent corruption

- An asset recovery bill to recover state assets

- Housing Bill

- Maldives International Financial Services Authority Bill

Concluding the Presidential Address, President Muizzu said the government will continue to fulfill its promises to the people and deliver results.

"It is my pleasure, my duty and my responsibility to reach out to the people, listen to them and realize their goals. Every citizen is equal before me while I fulfill this responsibility," he said.

President Muizzu assured that he would implement the promises made in the Presidential Address with integrity and faithfulness and deliver results
