Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has been ordered to pay a fine of MVR one million to the government within one month.
The Criminal Court had earlier sentenced Adeeb to 20 years in jail and slapped on a fine of MVR two million on seven counts of fraud in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) case.
With MVR one million still unpaid, the state went back to court to get Adeeb to pay the dues. In the case, the Civil Court yesterday said that Adeeb's representatives have told the court that he is unable to pay the fine as a lump sum. However, with the government refusing to allow more than one month to make the payment, the court ruled that Adeeb has to make the payment within one month from yesterday.
Although Adeeb was sentenced to 20 years in prison, former President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih reduced his sentence to just four days during his last term in office. With that Adeeb is now a free man.
Former President Solih was subject to heavy criticism over Adeeb’s sentence being commuted. Since his release, Adeeb now lives abroad.
