President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced today that the list of recipients for the 4,000 flats being constructed in Hulhumale' Phase 2 under the Gedhoruveriyaa (Homeowner) Scheme will be published before the upcoming Ramadan.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced today that the list of recipients for the 4,000 flats being constructed in Hulhumale' Phase 2 under the Gedhoruveriyaa (Homeowner) Scheme will be published before the upcoming Ramadan.
Speaking to journalists before concluding his official trip to GA. and GDH. atolls, the President said that over the past year, he has been working to distribute flats and land plots as promised during his campaign.
President Muizzu stated that this was his campaign promise to provide flats to rightful beneficiaries without taking away any previously allocated land or flats from citizens.
"I hope to finalize and hand over the 4,000 flats as soon as possible. God willing, we are working to announce [the flat list] before Ramadan. I strongly believe [the list will be announced]," the President said.
However, the President stated that those who attempted to obtain flats through fraudulent means would not be included in the list. He said that those who altered documents or provided false information to obtain flats and land would be disqualified.
"I promised not to take away any flat or land given to any citizen. If someone has obtained a flat or land through lies, deception, or forgery, they will be disqualified," President Muizzu said in response to a question from a Mihaaru reporter.
He said that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is investigating claims of unfair flat allocations, and those found to have issues would not receive flats.
"We want to give flats as promised to everyone except those who have done something wrong or those found to have issues in ACC's investigation," the President said.
The government had previously set various dates last year to release the flat list. However, while those deadlines passed without the list being published, it was indefinitely postponed on November 16.
Most recently, the Ministry stated that they were working on addressing concerns raised by ACC regarding corruption allegations in the permanent list of flat recipients under the Gedhoruveriyaa Scheme, following complaints from the public.
The ministry said the list review is being conducted under the guidance of the Housing Advisory Committee and Housing Consultative Committee established under President Muizzu's direction.
They stated that additional time was needed to complete the verification of numerous aspects among the 20,697 application forms submitted for the flats under this project.
The previous government had stated that out of the 20,697 people who applied for these nearly completed flats, 18,167 people met the eligibility criteria.
However, according to ACC's two-month investigation into complaints about the flats, 60 percent of the 4,000 people on the permanent list of recipients obtained their flats through deception. The ACC stated these were not legitimate beneficiaries.
