PG orders ACC to expedite investigations

Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef has ordered the Anti Corruption Commission to expedite their investigations, following complaints that the commission's investigations are being delayed over long periods of time.

Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef has ordered the Anti Corruption Commission to expedite their investigations, following complaints that the commission's investigations are being delayed over long periods of time.

PG Office said that they are receiving complaints that investigations by the ACC are not proceeding at appropriate speeds, due to which the Prosecutor General looked into the matter.

Through this, it came to the PG Office's notice that criminal investigations are being delayed, recovery of fund lost through corruption are also being delayed, affecting the interests of the public.

As such, under the powers vested in the PG under Article 223 (f) and (l) of the Constitution, instructions have been drafted on the forwarding of criminal investigations to the PG Office, with ACC ordered to implement them effective today.

PG Office said that this order instructs the ACC to give special attention to and expedite cases involving public funds and public interests to be expedited, such as the investigations into the MMPRC corruption, misuse of state funds and property during Covid 19 pandemic, SOEs, and Gedhoruveriya and Binveriya housing schemes.

Recently, the PG Office has voided the agreements made with former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb and SOF leaders in the MMPRC corruption case, and ordered the Police and ACC to conduct investigations into related cases.

The office has also ordered Police and ACC to conduct investigations into issues surrounding wrongful allocation of housing and other irregularities in the Gedhoruveriya and Binveriya housing schemes.
