Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said yesterday that the country's borders will reopen on April 1 2022. Prime Minister Ismail Sabri also spoke at the press conference about reopening Malaysia's borders safely and shifting into the endemic stage. Since the first movement control order (MCO) in March 2020, the country's borders have been closed.

PM Ismail expressed confidence in the country's economy, stating that the decision will enable Malaysians the freedom to travel abroad and international tourists the opportunity to visit the country. “We believe that our tourism sector, which has been affected by this closure, will be able to operate fully once again,” he said.

Fully vaccinated travellers, according to PM Ismail, do not need to go through quarantine when they return to Malaysia. Instead, they will just need to be tested for Covid-19 before leaving and when they arrive.

Malaysia's air VTL service to Cambodia and Thailand will begin on March 15, with the same service between Malaysia and Singapore expanding to include the Penang-Singapore route on March 16.

PM Ismail stated that the decision to reopen borders was based on "science and the most up-to-date data" about Covid-19, and looking at decisions made by other countries to reopen borders. Travellers are hopeful to revisit the culturally diverse country, with a little bit of everything for everyone.
