Indian experts have stated that Maldives has the capacity to achieve first place global ranking in carrom.

Maldives Carrom Association has enlisted the expertise of two seasoned former carrom champions to train the Maldivian team for the upcoming Asian Carrom Championships set to commence on Saturday in Male' City.

In their assessment of the Maldivian team's playing standard, the Association noted that Indian experts Yogesh Dongade and Zaid Ahmed provided positive feedback after evaluating the quality of the team's play.

"Their hopes in the Men's team of Maldives is especially high". said the Men's team's manager, Nazim Hassan.

"After observing the play style of Maldivian players, the two trainers had highlighted that there isn't must of a difference between the styles of Maldivian and Indian players."

Nazim said that Yogesh and Zaid had commented on India's significant advantage in being able to select numerous talented carrom players from their vast population.

"There are very good talents in multiple states of India. Therefore, they have an advantage in obtaining competitive matches within the country as well." said Nazim.

However, they said that the lack this opportunity for Maldivian players within the country is one the biggest shortcomings.

"What the two trainers had highlighted the most is that Maldives has the capacity to beat India if the Maldivian athletes receive more intense matches." Nazim said.

A total of 12 Asian countries will compete in the championship, which will be held at the Social Centre. The championship has been on hold for the past 10 years.

While Maldives has taken the initiative to revive the interrupted Championship games as the hosting country this year, the Carrom Association had previously disclosed that Maldives has been collaborating with the International Carrom Federation (ICF) to devise a plan to ensure uninterrupted yearly championships. This plan is currently at the stage of selecting host countries for the upcoming five years.

Twelve teams are arranged to visit Maldives to participate in this year's tournament. They are India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Japan, South Korea and Malaysia.

The Maldivian team's head coach is Maldives' Shafee Mohamed.
