The project will be implemented in three phases.
The government has handed over the project of introducing the state's taxi line over to MTCC.
Director General of Transport Ministry Ahmed Shameem signed the agreement on behalf of the ministry, while MTCC was represented by the company's Managing Director Ahmed Saudy at a special ceremony held at Meerumaa lounge.
Under the agreement, MTCC is to provide taxi services through electric vehicles (EVs), and the service would be offered similar to how Uber and Grab works in other countries.
MTCC's Managing Director Saudy said the company is introducing the service to solve the existing difficulties faced by the public in accessing taxi transport services. He also reiterated that all vehicles used in the taxi line would be electric vehicles to ensure environmental consciousness.
Saudy also said the service would open up job opportunities for many people.
"We will have full-time and part-time jobs. This is an opportunity that could be used by unemployed individuals as well. This will be of great benefit to the public," he said.
Saudy went on to say that part-time employees would be selected after special sessions to familiarise them with the job, including best practices when driving.
The introduction of this service would establish a quality public transport system, he added.
This 24 hour government taxi line will be launched in three phases. In the first phase, the service will be launched in Malé, Hulhumalé and Velana International Airport this year. Under the second phase, the service will be introduced in 2026 and 2027 in Villingili and Thilafushi. In the third phase, the service is planned to be introduced in Rasmalé, Giraavaru, Addu, Fuvahmulah and Kulhudhuffushi, which would be in 2028 and 2029.
