The parliament, on Saturday, concluded the third-term of the year and went into a recess period of two months.
Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed commended members, stating that the third term was more productive than the previous one. Some of the major activities he highlighted were the amendments to the Fisheries Act, Decentralisation Act, finalising the income tax bill and passing the 2020 State Budget.
As per statistics revealed by the Parliament Secretariat, 16 bills were submitted during the second term while 23 were submitted during the third. Overall, the Parliament completed work on 11 bills while 28 bills remain pending.
While 12 petitions were presented to the parliament in the second term, five additional petitions were submitted in the third term. A total of 15 petitions remain incomplete.
The parliament has completed work regarding 17 of the cases submitted by the state. Two of these cases were put forward during the second term while 16 were submitted during the third.
In the second term, six parliamentary proposals were submitted with 17 additional proposals put forward in the third term. Parliament Speaker Nasheed requested that work concerning the remaining six proposals be carried out during the recess period via committee meetings.
Speaker Nasheed stated that 128 hours and 37 minutes were spent at 33 sessions in the third term. He revealed that 92 percent attendance was recorded for the sittings and that 441 hours were spent on committee meeting.
Furthermore, 12 cases involving questioning of cabinet ministers remain pending while a total of 24 were submitted.
Overall, the parliamentarians concluded 53 percent of their work before commencing recess.
