Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom met with former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad late Monday.
According to Maumoon’s Office, the former president and his wife met Mahathir and his wife at a dinner hosted by the latter. Former PM Mahathir had inquired after the situation in the Maldives and wished for further progress and development to the island nation.
Former President Maumoon also expressed gratitude to Malaysia for its continued friendship and support to the Maldives.
Mahathir Mohamed was Malaysia’s longest serving prime minister from 1981 to 2003. After quiting Malaysia’s governing party, the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), he has been working as the opposition to the incumbent Prime Minister Najib Razak. He founded a new political party to work with other opposition parties in Malaysia.
