Some politicians who led the forming of breakaway party The Democrats after rifts that rose in Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in the lead up to the last presidential election have rejoined MDP last night.

Former STO Managing Director and the running mate for the 2023 presidential election, Hussain Amru, former President's Office Minister Mohamed Shifaz, and former MP for Central Henveiru Ali Azim are amongst those who have made the switch, Mihaaru News reports.

The three left MDP due to disagreements that were formed during the previous administration led by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. MDP split into two factions at the time, one behind Solih, and the other behind former President and former Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.

Those who were behind Nasheed, and subsequently left MDP, later formed The Democrats.

While some former MDP leaders have returned to the party, the party is planning to hold a major rally on January 31 under its 'In defence of the Constitution' theme.
