Former MP for Madaveli constituency Hussain Firushan has been elected as the interim President of The Democrats.

The position of party President became vacant when former President of The Democrats Hassan Latheef resigned from the post and joined main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party.

As per the party's regulations, a Deputy President of the party must assume the responsibilities of the President should the post become vacant. Hence, Firushan and Alaika Ahmed from amongst Deputy Presidents volunteered to fill the post.

In last night's meeting of the party's National Assembly, a vote was taken where Firushan received 29 votes and Alaika received 14. With 44 members voting, one vote was deemed invalid.

The National Assembly consists of 130 members. The party regulations, however, state that to participate in voting for positions, members must physically attend the meeting where the vote is taken.

The Democrats said that Firushan has been elected as an interim President to fulfill the responsibilities of party leader until a permanent President is elected.

At last night's meeting, a motion to hold an election within 50 days to elect a President was also passed.
