An emergency motion submitted to parliament regarding electricity outages in Addu has been rejected.

The emergency motion was submitted by opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Parliamentary Group Leader and MP for South Hithadhoo Ibrahim Nazil.

In the motion, Nazil said that the continued power outages in Addu are causing difficulties in the daily lives of the people of Addu, in addition to causing damage to costly electronic appliances in households. Nazil emphasized that this is causing immense loss and inconvenience to Addu residents.

"This parliament cannot in any way accept the government's failure to provide any solutions to this issue, and the difficult circumstances under which Addu residents are now living," the motion said.

Nazil said that despite the Addu Power Station repeatedly saying that even at present, they need two 3 megawatt gensets to resolve the electricity issues, the government had only sent one 1.8 megawatt genset.

In the vote taken today in the parliament which holds ruling PNC super majority, 47 MPs voted against accepting the motion, while only 13 voted in favour. This includes 11 MPs from MDP and PNC MP for Central Hithadhoo Ahmed Azaan and Velidhoo MP Mohamed Abbas from Maldives Development Alliance (MDA).
