Former Vice President Faisal Naseem has stated that peace can only be maintained in a country if governance aligns with the collective mindset of its people.

He made these remarks in an interview with Raajje TV outside the Henveiru police station, where opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) activist Mariyam Zubair (Mandhy) was presented on Sunday.

Faisal said that Maldivians had fought for their rights for many years, and restricting those rights would only lead to resentment against the government.

He said that history has shown Maldivians will not back down when their rights are violated, even in the face of intimidation by security forces.

He called on authorities to stop intimidating both the public and journalists, stressing that national stability can only be achieved if all voices are heard and considered.

"The government must act responsibly. If we continue to protect only the interests of certain individuals while neglecting others, we will never maintain national unity, and the country will regress," Faisal said.

He further added that people will always speak out when their rights are compromised and reiterated that peace can only be upheld by listening to and addressing public concerns.

Faisal also urged the police to act in accordance with the law and expressed concern over the selective enforcement of justice by independent institutions.

"It is regrettable that some individuals’ actions go unnoticed while others are scrutinized. What kind of example are we setting for our children? These matters need to be addressed," he said, adding that it is not too late to correct these things.

Mariyam Zubair and another MDP activist Fathimath Shiuna were summoned by the police in connection with ongoing MDP-led protests in Male'.

They are accused of violating the Freedom of Assembly Act by gathering, making noise, obstructing public transport, and interfering with police operations during a demonstration last Monday night.

MDP has launched a series of protests following the removal of several individuals from the Gedhoruveriyaa housing scheme flat list. Former Makunudhoo MP Mohamed Raai and former RDC Managing Director Moosa Ali Manik (Mookey) have also been summoned by the police in connection with the demonstrations.
