Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan has indicated his intention to retire.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of newly admitted lawyers, Chief Justice Muthasim remarked that he is now an elderly man and implied that he might not be seen in such a capacity in the future.

"I am now an elderly person. It is only appropriate that I will not be seen in such a ceremony in this capacity," he said.

Having served in the judiciary for 32 years, Chief Justice Muthasim shared key advice for those entering the legal profession, emphasizing the importance of confidentiality.

He advised lawyers that their responsibilities extend beyond courtrooms, as they often work with companies and institutions that require discretion. He said that maintaining confidentiality is a fundamental principle of legal practice.

"Keep confidentiality. Lawyers, keep confidentiality when practicing law. Lawyers will not only go to court and advocate. They will also do the work of companies and various other institutions and people that should be kept confidential," he said.

He cautioned lawyers against sharing information about their clients with third parties, especially financial details when working with corporations.

"A lawyer must uphold the trust and confidence of the company," he said.

Reflecting on the changes in the legal field over the years, Chief Justice Muthasim advised lawyers to stay updated with legal developments and adapt to evolving laws in Maldives.

"We can become familiar with these changes in the law and keep pace with development," he said.

Justice Muthasim said that doing so would lead to progress and success in the field.

Last week, at the swearing-in ceremony for magistrates, the Chief Justice also advised judges to approach their work with kindness while ensuring they remain impartial and unemotional when delivering judgments.
