Inflation on food products at 8.4 percent in January

As per statistics shared by central bank Maldives Monetary Authority, food inflation is 3.3 percent higher this January than it was in the same period last year.

In January, food inflation was at 8.4 percent.

As per statistics shared by central bank Maldives Monetary Authority, food inflation is 3.3 percent higher this January than it was in the same period last year.

Last year, food inflation was highest in August, at 8.3 percent.

Total inflation in January was at 5.3 percent, with is a 4.4 percent increase compared to January 2024.

Inflation on restaurant prices was at 29.3 percent. Inflation on tuna was at 13 percent.

MMA said that the spike in inflation is due to the increase in import duty and price hikes in restaurants. Inflation on food products, they said, is due to the increased prices of fish, vegetables and fruits.

Last year, food inflation was at 6.5 percent on average. Total inflation was then at an average of 1.4 percent.
