The PPM/PNC coalition candidate in the upcoming Malé City mayoral election, former Attorney General Azima Shakoor has submitted her candidacy form on Tuesday, December 12.
The Elections Commission (EC) earlier announced that the mayoral by-election has been scheduled for January 13, 2024.
Besides Azima, three others from the coalition running for Malé City Council's vacant seats submitted their respective candidacy forms on Tuesday as well.
Previously, Azima said that she would uphold the same vision held by former mayor and current President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu if elected as the next Mayor of Malé City.
"I believe that at this time, electing a capable, dedicated, and experienced individual who will work alongside the government is necessary in solving the issues faced in Malé," Azima said.
Azima is facing competition from former Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) CEO Adam Azim contesting through the current opposition, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
In addition to Azim, City Council's councilor Mohamed Saif Fathih from The Democrats and Hussain Waheed, the former Police Commissioner and a member of the People's National Front (PNF) founded by former President Abdulla Yameen, are running for the position.
The position of Malé City Mayor fell vacant after its most recent mayor, Dr. Muizzu, was elected as the next president in this year's presidential election.
Other positions of the council vacated after its respective members were appointed to various state designations.
