Three immigration staff have been arrested for allegedly accepting bribes from an expatriate, following an investigation launched on Thursday.

The arrests were made during an operation conducted that night, although authorities have not disclosed further details.
Two of the arrested individuals were remanded in custody for 10 days, while the third was remanded for three days.
Former Immigration Controller Mohamed Shamaan Waheed was also arrested in connection with the case and has been remanded for 15 days.
Police previously stated that after releasing the expatriate, immigration officers took MVR 530,000 taken in exchange of his release to the building where Shamaan resides.
According to police, the operation was carried out by immigration staff from sections other than the Task Force and Risk Management teams, which are responsible for identifying and detaining expatriates living and working illegally in Maldives. Authorities revealed that one of the expatriates was released late at night on Shamaan’s orders. The immigration staff involved in the search later met the expatriate on the street and took the money to Shamaan’s residence.
