In a post on social media today, Police said that drug and alcohol use and sale is expected to see a rise in the coming days. Hence, the Drug Enforcement Department (DED), together with the Hulhumale' Police, Marine Police, and police stations across Kaafu atoll have launched a major joint operation.
Under this operation, the lagoons of Hulhumale' where many safari boats are docked will be regularly patrolled, cafe's and monitors suspected of bringing on island and selling alcohol will be monitored, and action will be taken against any seen to break the laws.
Every year, alcohol and drugs are seized at new year's eve parties in the Male' area and islands with local tourism.
Over the past year, over 183 kg of drugs and over 8400 bottles of alcohol have been seized in various operations. The street price of the seized goods exceed MVR 385 million.
