The Malé City Council has deployed two high-capacity pumps to improve flood drainage in the city.

The council announced handing them over to the Ministry of Defence for operation last Friday. These pumps were used in flood control in the past two days.

These pumps, brought in last September, can remove 11,356 liters of water per minute, which is several times faster than the previously used pumps, which had capacities of 1,300 and 900 liters per minute.

The city council said that Malé's drainage system poses challenges, making flood control efforts reliant on multiple agencies.

Mayor Adam Azim stated that these pumps would significantly reduce public inconvenience caused by flooding, as they are more efficient and resistant to clogging from debris.

Water pumps were installed at 10 key locations, including the IGMH area, West Park, and the Maafannu ferry terminal. By 10:00 pm last night, they had removed 1,000 tonnes of water into the sea.
