Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has said that despite having faced delays at Velana International Airport (VIA) due to the rainy conditions, they have now brought operations back on track by bringing in additional staff.

VIA earlier said that today would be a high traffic day due to Umrah pilgrims, as well as holiday goers returning, and being stuck at the airport due to the heavy rains.

An MACL media official said that many measures were taken to alleviate congestion at the airport and assist passengers and the public. This includes bringing in additional staff on duty and assisting passengers arriving in Maldives.

The airport's busiest time was between 06:00hrs and 09:00hrs today, when a total of 2678 passengers, including 618 umrah pilgrims, arrived in Maldives. This period also had 1,372 passenger departures scheduled.

The next busiest time was between 14:00hrs and 16:00hrs. During this time, there were 2071 arrivals, including 452 umrah pilgrims. 1,091 departures had been scheduled.

They said that umrah pilgrims have now left the airport, with the remaining being passengers bound to travel to resorts and guesthouses.

With the flooded roads in Male' making it difficult for taxis to operate, the MTCC buses carried people to Male'.
