Many employees at Broadcasting Commission of Maldives are concerned on the lack of action taken in the sexual harassment case that came to light at the commission.

In the case in question, Vice President of Broadcom Mohamed Fazeen is accused of sexual harassment against a female member of staff.

Regarding the case, both Fazeen and the victim were summoned to the Parliament's Committee on Independent Institutions, however the matter remains unresolved.

Generally, sexual harassment cases are considered in the Parliament's Committee on Human Rights and Gender. However, in this case, the Committee on Independent Institutions is looking into the matter as the allegations are against a member of the Broadcasting Commission.

Fazeen continues to report to work while the case remains stalled in parliament.

On condition of anonymity, a source close to the case said that there are concerns amongst staff members at the BroadCom as well about the delays in action in the case. They said that the victim, however, is no longer attending office. She is facing psychological distress due to the matter, and is receiving treatment, they said.

Staff are also concerned that BroadCom President Sofa Shafeeq and other members continue to remain silent regarding the case.

The Broadcasting Commission also has failed to take any action in the matter so far. The BroadCom Act does not specifically allow action to be taken against a member in a case such as this.

A case against Fazeen has now been lodged with the Police as well, Mihaaru News reports.

Fazeen previously worked as a reporter at Raajje TV. He was appointed to the Broadcasting Commission in 2021, and elected as Vice President in January 2023.
