The president made several pledges during today's visit to the island.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu assured the people of K. Gulhi during his visit to the island today, that he will continue to implement the projects requested by the island.
After meeting with the Gulhi Council and the Women's Development Committee (WDC), the President said he would continue the development projects requested by the people of Gulhi.
Acknowledging the significant congestion in the island, President Muizzu said that the project to reclaim land in the island was handed over to a party at the end of the previous administration. However, the project could not be carried out because the funds allocated in that year's budget was not sufficient to proceed with the project.
The dredging work is now being carried out by MTCC, and the President said that the reclamation work will be completed at full speed. This will solve the housing problem faced by the island, he said.
The President also said the council has requested to increase the space of the island's harbour due to space constraints. As such, discussions would be held to determine whether it would be better to expand the existing harbour or build a new one, he said.
Due to the lack of space in the island's school, a new building was also being constructed in the island, but the project was also stalled. President Muizzu assured that he would have it re-started.
The island's mosque also has space issues, with only a capacity of 400 people while the island has about 1000 residents. Locals report many difficulties in completing Friday prayers because of this. To alleviate this, the President also promised a new mosque.
Several government officials also accompanied the President to Gulhu during this one-day visit.
