Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has withdrawn a case they lodged at the Civil Court seeking to reclaim their previous party gathering hub after having being evicted from it through notice by the landlord.
The landlord is a former MDP activist Shafiyya Zubair. She left the party in 2023 amidst infighting within the party.
MDP failed to vacate the premises within the period defined in the notice Shafiyya issued to them. Shafiyya then rented the premises to another party.
The premises then housed the party hub of The Democrats. Following this, the premises are now used as a hub for ruling People's National Congress (PNC).
MDP filed a case at the Civil Court claiming the eviction notice had been in contravention of the lease agreement. They appealed to the Civil Court to rule that the party can continue to use the premises at the previously determined rent rate.
Civil Court stated that proceeding this case would not provide additional funds to either the claimant or the defendant, and will result in wasting time and funds. MDP then requested to withdraw the case last month.
The Civil Court has now closed the case.
