President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Wednesday, appointed Ahmed Athif as the Deputy Minister of Tourism.

Deputy ministers receive a basic salary of MVR 18,000 and allowances that reach MVR 12,500, adding up to MVR 30,500.

Prior to his appointment, Athif was a member of the Haa Dhaalu Atoll Council and served in the positions of president and vice president.

Athif is contesting in the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s primary election in order to secure the party ticket to contest for the mayorship of Kulhudhuffushi City in the upcoming local council election. The competing candidate for the recently designated city is Hilman Mohamed Athif.

The newly appointed deputy minister also contested in MDP's primary ahead of the 2019 parliamentary election. However, he was beaten by Jamsheed Mohamed who is now the parliamentarian representing Kulhudhuffushi South constituency.

Athif holds a Graduate Diploma in Business Administration from Avid College and is currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the British School of Commerce.
