President Muizzu praised Estonia's digitalisation of services and hopes to receive the country's assistance to digitalise Maldivian public services as well.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu emphasized last night that while neighboring countries remain the Maldives' closest allies, his administration will strengthen ties with all nations, prioritizing the public's best interests without compromising the country's sovereignty.
In an interview with PSM before concluding his official visit to Estonia, the President said that the foreign policy of his administration is to prioritise Maldivians in a way that protects their interests.
"Our neighbors will be very important to us. That fact will not change. Despite that fact, I believe that we must pave the way for all paths that benefit Maldivians," he said.
However, he said Maldives' independence, sovereignty and the people's interests will always come first.
“...I want to maintain close ties with all countries that provide assistance to facilitate the development of Maldivian people, like I said, if we are able to move forward without compromising our independence,” he said.
Referring to his visit to Estonia, he said the visit was very successful in achieving the government's vision of digitalising Maldives.
Noting that Estonia is a worldwide example in building a digital economy, President Muizzu said he was assured of Estonia's assistance and cooperation in Maldives' efforts to digitalise public services.
"We want to digitalise our public services 100 percent. We want to change the traditional paper archiving to a digital archive," he said.
As such, to achieve this goal, the assistance of a country like Estonia, which is implementing it successfully, is a great step forward, he said.
