The government has said today that the committee put together to investigate the awarding of flats being developed in Hulhumalé Phase 2 will conclude before construction finishes.
Speaking to journalists at a press conference, the newly appointed Chief Spokesperson of the President’s Office Heena Waleed said that the flat committee’s work is progressing at full speed, and that the issues raised by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) will be concluded before the construction work ends.
The apartments will also be handed out to the owners by then, she said.
"The [construction] of the flats is not yet complete. The hope is for the decisions of the flat committee to be made and for the deserving individuals to receive their flats before the construction is finished," said Heena.
The work for the construction of 4,000 flats contracted to Indian companies by Fahi Dhiriulhun is currently ongoing in Hulhumale'.
While a list of beneficiaries for the housing flats had been announced at the time, the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) prevented the distribution of the apartments.
Following investigations, the Commission discovered that 60 percent of the 4,000 individuals deemed eligible on the permanent list of eligible candidates released by the previous government were in fact, not eligible. Out of those who are eligible, only 20.7 percent application forms had no issues while the remaining 19.7 percent application forms were eligible but contained discrepancies in the information provided according to the ACC’s report.
The flat committee was brought together by the government to ensure that the flats are awarded to those who are indeed eligible.
According to the Managing Director of Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation Hamdhan Shakeel, all 16 towers of the project are estimated to conclude by the end of this year with the help of additional labourers.
