Minister Muthalib highlighted the need to increase the city's drainage capacity, and said that National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is working towards acquiring mobile trailer pumps.
Construction Minister Dr Abdulla Muthalib has said that mobile trailer pumps are being brought in as a temporary measure to mitigate flooding in Male' City.
In an interview with Mihaaru News, the minister emphasized the importance of finding immediate solutions to manage flooding while working toward a permanent resolution.
Muthalib highlighted the need to increase the city's drainage capacity, and said that National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is working towards acquiring mobile trailer pumps.
These pumps are on wheels and is designed for easy mobility. Currently, flooding in Male' is resolved using a mobile trailer pump and ordinary pumps used by Maldives National Defense Force's (MNDF).
“If we have five or six mobile trailer pumps, it will provide significant relief,” said the minister.
He said that the capacity of these pumps is 600 tonnes of water per hour, making them effective for large-scale water removal.
During last Friday’s heavy rainfall, Male' experienced severe flooding. According to Minister Muthalib, MNDF pumps drained 30,000 tonnes of water, while an additional 60,000 tonnes were removed using temporary pump stations set up in five locations across Male'.
The minister said that a long-term solution requires rebuilding the city’s roads to address drainage issues.
The government has secured USD 100 million in free aid from China for a road reconstruction project in Male' and Vilimale'. A team of Chinese consultants began feasibility studies in November last year.
The government aims to initiate the project this year.
