Parliament's Foreign Relations Committee today approved the appointment of Aishath Azeema as the High Commissioner of Maldives to India.

Azeema, currently serving as the Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was nominated for the position by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu yesterday.

At today's committee meeting, Maafannu South MP Abdullah Rifau initially proposed interviewing Azeema for the role. However, Kulhudhuffushi South MP Mohamed Dawood suggested that the committee approve Azeema without an interview, citing her extensive education and experience.

When Dawood's motion was supported by other members, MP Rifau withdrew his proposal, and the committee unanimously approved Azeema's appointment.

Azeema is a seasoned diplomat, having held various positions in foreign relations over the years. Notably, she served as the Maldives Ambassador to China from 2019 to 2023.

Azima was appointed as the High Commissioner of Maldives to India after Ibrahim Shaheeb, former High Commissioner's term completed.

Shaheeb was appointed as High Commissioner to India in November 2022 during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration.

Prior to his appointment in India, Shaheeb was the Maldives Ambassador to Singapore for one year. His diplomatic career, which began in 1991, has seen him serve in various capacities, including as Chief of Protocol in 2018.

According to the Foreign Service Act, ambassadors and High Commissioners are appointed for a term of three years.
