China has today gifted ACs for use in the government's Cool School initiative, which aims to fix ACs in all classrooms in Maldives.
In a ceremony held at Centre for Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) in Male', the ACs were officially handed over by Chinese Ambassador to Maldives Wang Lixin, and were accepted by Minister of Education Dr Ismail Shafeeu.
The exact number of ACs which were gifted has not been disclosed as of yet.
The Education Ministry said that it has been decided these ACs will be used in the Hulhumale' branch of CHSE, which will result in providing a comfortable environment to conduct lessons in.
The Cool School project, which aims to install air conditioners in all schools in Maldives within two years, was launched in June at a ceremony held at Maafushi School.
The Minister said then that placing ACs in classrooms would pose a 38 percent increase in expenses, but added that 30 percent of the project would be covered through renewable energy.
The project is being conducted by the government, together with assistance from private individuals, through identifying schools where solar panels can be installed.
Although this project has been commenced, some schools are currently working on installing ACs in their classrooms in collaboration with parents.
