Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Advisor Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has urged members of Jumhooree Party (JP) to support PPM and People's National Congress (PNC) coalition's candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in the runoff polls scheduled for September 30.

The former Minister of Islamic Affairs, who is actively involved in Dr. Muizzu's campaign, made this statement in response to JP leader Qasim Ibrahim's recent declaration that his party members could support any of the candidates they had endorsed.

"I humbly request the members of JP to support Dr. Muizzu. We can develop the country only through unity," Dr. Shaheem tweeted.

JP leader Qasim Ibrahim on Sunday evening, September 17, officially announced the party's decision not to ally behind either of the leading parties from the first round of the presidential election.

Regarding JP's decision to remain neutral, Qasim said that the party decided not to align with any candidate due to their negative experiences as a coalition partner in the past.

PPM/PNC coalition candidate Dr. Muizzu took lead in the first round of the presidential elections with 101,635 votes while Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate and current President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih coming in second with 86,161 votes.
