Former Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has endorsed Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) coalition’s candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in the upcoming presidential election.

Speaking at the coalition’s rally held on Friday evening in Laamu atoll Fonadhoo, September 1, Dr. Shaheem said that Dr. Muizzu was the most capable out of the candidates running in this year’s presidential race and stressed that Maldives needed strong reform which can only be brought by the PPM/PNC candidate.

The former Islamic Minister praised Dr. Muizzu, highlighting that Dr. Muizzu is one of the younger and more capable candidates in the election. Dr. Shaheem also commended the Malé City Mayor, noting that he continues to display discipline despite facing mockery and anti-campaign efforts from other contenders.

Dr. Shaheem highlighted that Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) members, including President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s campaign spokesperson Mariya Ahmed Didi heavily criticized Dr. Muizzu at the MDP campaign rally in Malé City held on Friday evening.

“Why do you think? You challenge what you fear, obviously. Despite this, Dr. Muizzu refrains from rebutting them. Isn’t that being wise? Isn’t that a characteristic of a good leader?”, Shaheem said.

While urging the public to vote for Dr. Muizzu at the upcoming presidential election scheduled for Saturday, September 9, Dr. Shaheem said Laamu atoll citizens have already made their decision.

“We need to elect Dr. Muizzu to ensure the Maldivian independence and sovereignty are upheld,” the former Islamic Minister added.

During Friday's rally, Dr. Shaheem called for the removal of the alleged Indian military presence from the Maldives. He also emphasized that the current government and its coalition parties have been consistently addressing the issue of foreign military presence in the country.

Shaheem voiced his confidence on PPM/PNC coalition, and added he was certain Dr. Muizzu will uphold Maldivian independence and sovereignty.

At the rally, Shaheem praised the opposition coalition’s candidate noting he had known Dr. Muizzu for years. He noted Dr. Muizzu was an educated, hardworking, and diligent individual.

“These are the qualities of a 21st century leader, someone who is well educated. So, I urge everyone from youth to women, elderly citizens and everyone who love this nation, religion, and sovereignty to think about this,” Shaheem added.

Shaheem also said not to get swayed by bribes offered by politicians ahead of the elections, and to prioritize long-term benefits instead of temporary gain.
