Two of STELCO's electricity transformers in Hulhumale' Phase 2 have been vandalized last night.
STELCO Managing Director Hussain Fahmy stated on social media platform X today that two high-voltage (HV) transformers in Hulhumale' Phase 2 were vandalized last night, leading to difficulties in providing electricity.
Fahmy said that the transformers were placed in areas with high security, with boundary walls, and double locks. Despite this, some persons had damaged the gate and lock, gaining entry, and had vandalized the HV systems.
Fahmy further said that assessments of the damage, such as seeing how the HV switches were turned off, indicate that the act had been committed by persons who had technical knowledge of transformer systems and operations.
He highlighted the danger of damaging such facilities which could lead to electrocution, serious injury and death. He added that the danger is caused not only to the perpetrators, but also to the general public.
He recalled how similar actions had led to a death last year, and warned that committing these acts could lead to such tragedies repeating.
Fahmy said that while investigations into the incident proceed, measures will also be taken to ensure such acts are not repeated.
In March last year, a man attempting to steal from a transformer near Hiyaa Tower 3 in Hulhumale' had died through electrocution. Another was arrested later in the year for attempting theft from transformers.
