The World Bodybuilding Championship to be hosted at Addu City's Canareef Resort will be the biggest international competition held in Maldives' history, said Bodybuilding Association's President Ibrahim Hameed.
Athletes and officials from 55 countries will participate in the event, which will be held from 5th to 11th of November. The Bodybuilding Association estimates that the total number of members in the entire contingent would exceed 500.
Speaking at the event's launching ceremony held at the VIP Hall of National Football Stadium, Bodybuilding Association's President Hameed said that this is a historic day for the country.
"A day that will be written in gold, in the history pages of Maldives. The day in which the biggest sports event in Maldives is being launched," said Hameed, who is also the Vice President of the World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Federation (WBPF).
In an interview with Mihaaru News following the event, Hameed said that with the contingency and organising work, this event would be the biggest sporting even in the country's history.
"Don't think there was ever a sporting event of this scale in Maldives. With the organising work and contingency plan, this will be the biggest international sporting event hosted in Maldives," he said.
He added that this would also be a sports event that would promote the country's tourism as well.
Maldives hosted the 2022 Asian Bodybuilding Championship in Kaafu atoll Maafushi and the Crossroads Maldives. Asian Bodybuilding Federation's President Paul Chua branded the event as one of the most well organised Asian Championships he had ever witnessed. Chua is also the President of WBPF.
