A female teacher who groomed a male student has been dismissed from her job.

The case of grooming a male student in eighth grade at that school was reported to the police on the 21st of last month.

An official from the Education Ministry told 'Mihaaru' that the teacher has been dismissed from her job after the school investigated the matter.

The child's guardian had also submitted the case to the Ministry. Therefore, the Ministry has forwarded the case to the police, according to the official.

Grooming is the process of establishing an emotional relationship with a child and trying to gain his or her trust by giving him or her money or other material things to commit sexual assault.

The incident occurred on an island in the south. In such cases, to protect children's identity, the police do not disclose any information that could reveal the children's identity, such as the name of the island and people involved, as it is legally prohibited.

As this grooming case comes to light, a teacher was arrested last year on suspicion of engaging in inappropriate conversations with school students. Though later released, the case has now been forwarded by the police to the Prosecutor General's (PG) Office for prosecution.

The punishment for grooming a child for sexual abuse is 10 years in prison. If the grooming is committed by a person in a position of trust for the child, the punishment is 15 years in prison.
