National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) disclosed late Wednesday that 33 individuals have been isolated, in connection with the foreign national who tested positive for COVID-19 after travelling to Joali Maldives and Raa Bodufushi.
Speaking at the daily press conference held at Dharubaaruge convention centre, Communications Undersecretary at the President's Office Mabrouq Abdul Azeez stated that the foreign national had visited both resorts, and tested positive after departing from the country.
The 33 people who were identified as having come into contact with the individual include resort staff, the crew of the vessel which transported the individual to the airport, as well as airport ground staff and flight crew.
Mabrouq stated that samples from 21 of the isolated individuals have been taken for testing so far, and that further contact tracing is underway.
Health Protection Agency (HPA) placed Joali Maldives and Raa Bodufushi under monitoring on Tuesday. The resorts will remain under monitoring until contract tracing is complete.
Maldives recorded its first case of COVID-19 on March 7, for Kuredu Island Resort. Since, as a measure to control the spread of the virus in the country, the government has suspended issuing on-arrival visas effective March 27.
Maldives presently records 19 confirmed and six active cases of COVID-19, with a total of 13 recoveries. While there are two confirmed cases of Maldivians, no local to local transmissions have been recorded.
The World Health Organization has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The novel coronavirus has infected over 1,436,800 people and claimed over 82,400 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 303, 700 people have recovered.
