Bank of Maldives (BML) has assured that no financial loss will be caused to any customer through any actions or negligence of a bank employee.

BML assured this in a statement released yesterday following Criminal Court's conviction of a former bank employee, Ali Mazin, for stealing money from customer accounts. The man was sentenced to pay a fine of MVR 56,000 and 40 hours community service.

BML stated that as soon as the matter had come to their notice, they had further investigated the matter, and dismissed the staff member.

"This employee had acted against the bank's policy procedure and taken money from customers' accounts for his personal use. The bank has deposited the amounts lost to the customers' bank accounts following this incident," the statement reads.

BML said that there are strict policies and guidelines which employees are required to follow. Any breach of this will be immediately logged and identified by internal controls.

The bank asserted that they would take firm action against any employees found to be acting against the set guidelines. They reasserted that any such actions will not result in causing financial loss to customers.
