Torrential rains have caused significant damage in several parts of the Maldives since the beginning of the year. Heavy downpours on January 3 led to widespread flooding in nearly all roads of Malé, resulting in severe damage to homes and property.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has urged the public to take necessary precautions as the Maldives braces for adverse weather conditions starting today.
According to the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET), a low-pressure system in the southwestern Bay of Bengal, east of the Maldives, is expected to move westward, bringing heavy rain and thunderstorms from January 13 to January 18 and will likely result in strong winds, rough seas, and possible storm surges, especially in the northern and central regions.
Therefore, NDMA has identified measures to protect against potential damages to property and belongings caused by adverse weather:
- Be aware of potential flooding due to heavy rain and place sandbags or similar barriers at doorways to prevent water from entering homes.
- Avoid parking motorcycles and other vehicles in areas prone to flooding.
- Take early precautions to protect business facilities and valuable goods stored in shops, warehouses, restaurants, and other storage facilities from potential damage.
- Relocate food supplies and household appliances from flood prone areas to a higher and safer location.
- Be mindful of strong winds and take safety measures to secure items that could be blown away by strong winds.
- Turn off and unplug electrical appliances when not in use.
- Stock up on staple foods and essential supplies to avoid shortages.
- Individuals planning sea travel to obtain updated weather information from relevant authorities before departure.
In addition, it is advised not to drive heavy vehicles during flooded conditions, especially in Male' City.
