During President Muizzu's address marking the 59th anniversary of the Maldives membership at the UN he said that the pathway needed for national development can be achieved by acquiring respect on the global stage.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu emphasized the critical role of the United Nations (UN) in upholding the independence and sovereignty of the Maldives in his address marking the 59th anniversary of the Maldives' membership at the UN.
The Maldives joined the UN on September 21, 1965, shortly after gaining independence on July 26 of the same year.
In his address, President Muizzu highlighted that the Maldives' membership in the UN has allowed the nation to establish and maintain relations with the international community.
He stressed that defending a country’s independence goes beyond citizens belief in its sovereignty and requires international recognition and advocacy. He noted that the Maldives flag has been raised at the UN headquarters since the country became a member
President Muizzu added that Maldivian diplomats have since promoted the nation's interests on the global stage.
President Muizzu said that his primary focus during his visit to the UN General Assembly (UNGA) would be to present his vision for the progress of the Maldives, emphasizing the importance of the Maldives being both respected and respectful within the international community.
He also underscored the Maldives' continued work toward membership in the UN Economic and Social Council, as well as its ongoing third term in the UN Human Rights Council.
He described the UN as the world's "main parliament" which acts as a platform for resolving global disputes and conflicts and a key arena for advancing national development by earning international respect.
Concluding his message, the President reiterated his commitment to shaping and implementing the Maldives’ foreign policy centred on a “Maldives first” approach. He reassured the Maldivian people of this commitment.
President Muizzu attended the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, where he highlighted the significant challenges faced by small nations, particularly the high levels of debt. He stressed the importance of finding a permanent solution through the Debt Sustainability Support Service (DSSS) to alleviate the financial pressures these small island nations face.
President Muizzu will conclude his visit on the September 29.
