After eight years, the government has today appointed a Director General at the Thalassemia Centre.

Ahmed Mausoom, who holds experience in management has been appointed to the position, the Health Ministry said today.

Mausoom has previously worked at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital as well. Most recently, he served as Director General of the Local Government Authority.

The Health Ministry said that an Assistant Director General and a Director will also be appointed to the centre soon. While an announcement has been made today seeking five nurses currently needed for the centre, the ministry will also be assigning a physician, they said.

Additional administrative staff will also be appointed in the coming days.

The changes are being brought following a protest this week by thalassemia patients and their families. Following this, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu visited the Thalassemia Centre and vowed to find resolutions to the concerns raised by patients and staff of the centre.
