Government begins distribution of canned fish cases ahead of Ramadan

Island councils are overseeing distribution in atolls, while the State Trading Organization (STO) will handle distribution in Male' region. STO is currently preparing for distribution but has yet to announce a start date.

The government has begun distributing cases of canned fish to every household in the country ahead of Ramadan, fulfilling a pledge made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu last November.

The Local Government Ministry confirmed that distribution has already started in some islands, beginning with Haa Dhaalu Atoll.

According to Deputy Minister Ali Shameem, distribution has been completed for households in Kulhudhuffushi, Nolhivaramfaru, Hanimaadhoo, and Kurinbi, while other islands in the atoll are expected to receive cases of fish canned fish within the week.

Last year, the government provided 1.6 million kilograms of staple food free of charge to 82,000 households and granted MVR 142 million in discounts on electricity and water bills.
