STELCO has received permission to install CCTV cameras to monitor electrical transformers in Hulhumale' Phase 2.

STELCO's media official Ahmed Mohamed told 'Mihaaru' today that they had requested permission to install CCTV cameras to monitor these transformers under HDC's supervision before. He said the initial request was made during the tenure of HDC's former MD, but it wasn't successful then.

"We've discussed with HDC's new MD and received permission, and we're now preparing to begin the CCTV installation work," he said.

The power supply project for Hulhumale' Phase 2 was awarded to a Chinese company for USD 70 million during former President Abdullah Yameen's administration. The project remains incomplete to date. Even when STELCO bid for the project, they weren't successful in securing it. Since the work isn't complete, the network hasn't been officially handed over to STELCO yet.

While theft from these transformers has become a serious issue, there is currently no security or CCTV cameras near them.

Last Tuesday night, someone attempted to steal cables after breaking into an electrical transformer. When the power was cut at the MPL flats due to the cable cutting, a STELCO employee who was in the area went to check, and according to STELCO's Managing Director Hussein Fahmy, there were two thieves at the scene.

When the employee tried to stop them, they attacked him with a wrench, resulting in injuries to his head and mouth.

Last year, someone also died from electrocution while attempting to steal from the transformers.

The transformers that STELCO maintains in Male' and Hulhumale' Phase 1 are secured in high-walled, locked enclosures. These locations are monitored with CCTV cameras. Even STELCO employees can only access these areas through special procedures and safety precautions.
