The President said the purpose of his visits to the islands with ministers is to provide an opportunity for people to share their concerns directly with the relevant ministers.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said today that he has begun touring islands to meet with island councils, local councils, and residents to drive results.
President Muizzu visited Raa atoll Vaadhoo as the first destination of his tour of Raa Atoll today and assured the island that he would fulfill the promises made during the presidential election.
The President said the purpose of his visits to the islands with ministers is to provide an opportunity for people to share their concerns directly with the relevant ministers.
“These are trips I am making to produce results,” President Muizzu said.
“I am making these trips to assure the people of getting things done. The ministers of relevant ministries come with me so you can clarify your concerns, and the ministers can tell the people what can be done to deliver results.”
The President began his tours early last year to visit all the atolls in the Maldives and meet with the local councils of the atolls, islands, and cities. So far, he has met with more than 100 councils.
Addressing the people of Vaadhoo, the President described Vaadhoo as an island that works proactively with a development mindset. He also assured the government’s cooperation in these efforts.
After discussions with the Vaadhoo council, President Muizzu said that land allocation is a major issue facing the island and promised to work on resolving it.
He said that delays in land allocation were caused by the location of the island’s landfill and pledged to find a permanent solution to the waste management problem and allocate land very soon.
He also noted that challenges in obtaining boulders have delayed the work to protect Vaadhoo’s erosion-prone areas. However, he assured residents that efforts are underway to resolve this.
“MTCC has delayed projects due to difficulties in supplying boulders to many islands in the country. Work has now started with the Ministry of Finance, MTCC, and STO,” he said.
“We are working to expedite the projects by bringing in boulder stones in bulk.”
President Muizzu also committed to addressing island erosion and advancing the harbor development and school projects.
An agreement was signed between the Vaadhoo Council and the Bank of Maldives (BML) to install an ATM on the island as well.
